Anyone can ask a model for ten questions about the fall of Rome. Relay also considers cognitive level, reading level, difficulty, standards alignment, and whether a wrong answer is plausible enough to reveal what a student actually understands.

An acquired product has to fit into the buyer’s world without losing what made it good. We designed Relay so the underlying model could change as the technology improved, and the front end could be re-skinned for Discovery Education without changing the teacher workflow or flattening the interaction design. We stayed involved after the acquisition to carry that quality through the handoff as Relay scaled to a much larger audience.
